Magazine 'miracle' diets should be 'dropped'

A government minister has written to magazine editors asking them not to promote post-Christmas "miracle" diets because they pose a "health risk".

The fact that most people are smart enough to realize that fad diets and exercise programs do not produce long term results is a non-issue in my opinion.  Of course they know better but the emotion that is involved with appearance overrides most rationale thought.  The mere fact that we are bombarded with ads in every form of media only strengthens the position of these scams.  To add to the confusion, most people believe that the FTC, FDA or FCC would never allow these entities from airing false advertisements.  Ah, naivete!

Word of advice: If it sounds too good to be true it probably is!

FDA Cracks Down on Fraudulent Diet Pills

There is no evidence the oral over-the-counter products are effective for weight loss, says Elizabeth Miller, FDA's leader for the Internet and health fraud team. While they may not be dangerous, they're at least "economic fraud," she says.

Not to misrepresent that injectable HCG perscribed by a Physician is any better.

The Food and Drug Administration and the Federal Trade Commission announced today that they have sent seven warning letters to companies that make the products, notifying them that they are violating federal law by selling drugs that have not been approved and by making unsupported claims for the substances.

There are no FDA-approved HCG products for weight loss, says Elizabeth Miller, the FDA's acting director of the division of non-prescription products and health fraud.

I get faxes, emails and calls requesting that I consider selling this product in my office. I like to make money and would love to help patients lose weight, but not with a product that has no efficacy.

Diet soda and weight gain: The connection may be, in a way, what you think

Mattes has studied how artificial sweeteners affect appetite and food intake. He believes that many studies reporting a link between diet soda and weight gain are actually hitting on a behavioral phenomenon—people think they can eat more calories because they’ve swapped their regular soda for a Coke Zero.

Study co-author Sharon Fowler, an epidemiologist, agrees – to a point. Yes, the diet drink association is partly psychological, she says, but she also believes there could be physiological explanations for why chemicals in diet sodas could lead to weight gain.

In rodent studies, researchers have observed artificial sweeteners stimulating cells in the pancreas to change insulin secretion, altering the pH in the gut, and affecting hunger-regulating cells in the brain. Fowler and colleagues also reported this week that diabetes-prone mice exposed to aspartame for three months had higher blood-sugar levels than those not exposed at all.

Nautilus North Study

REVOLUTIONARY NEW FAT LOSS PROGRAM

In February of 2006, 33 subjects, comprised of 22 women and 11 men (aged 25-64) agreed to take part in a radical experiment at Nautilus North Strength & Fitness Centre. After years of listening to “the latest thing” to come down the river of diet programs, we decided to conduct a study to determine just how little exercise was required to lose pure body fat, understanding that simply losing “weight” was relatively easy as some of that weight would be lean tissue. The study lasted 10-weeks. No supplements or special dietary restrictions were imposed, save for using a well-balanced but modestly reduced calorie diet in conjunction with a workout that lasted a mere two minutes and performed but once a week. Here are the results:

TOTAL WEIGHT LOSS: 442.4 lbs.

GREATEST WEIGHT LOSS (MEN): 43.2 lbs
GREATEST WEIGHT LOSS (WOMEN): 25.8 lbs
AVERAGE WEIGHT LOSS: 17.02 lbs.

TOTAL PURE FAT LOSS: 405 lbs.

Greatest Fat Loss (Men): 33.8 lbs
Average Fat Loss (Men): 20.9 lbs.
Greatest Fat Loss (Women): 23.6 lbs.
Average Fat Loss (Women): 13.2 lbs.
AVERAGE PURE FAT LOSS: 15.58 lbs

STRENGTH INCREASES
(After only 10 workouts!):

Lower Body (Men): 43.05%
Upper Body (Men): 30.42%
Lower Body (Women): 43.73
Upper Body (Women): 32.51%
AVERAGE OVERALL STRENGTH INCREASE: 35.46%

TOTAL LEAN (MUSCLE) INCREASE: + 132.8%

Average Lean Gain % (Men): + 6.21%
Average Lean Gain % (Women): + 4.52%
OVERALL AVERAGE LEAN (MUSCLE) GAIN: + 5.11%

Never in the history of fat loss and exercise (and that’s quite a history) has there ever been this much fat loss from this little amount of exercise – and all of the above results were achieved employing a workout that lasted (on average) a mere 2 minutes and was performed only once a week! Moreover, when the results were compared between groups that trained with more exercise versus those that trained with less, that those who trained the least lost more fat and gained more muscle by a ratio of 2-to-1! No 45-minute per day sessions on a treadmill were necessary – nor any other form of aerobic exercise.

Knowing this, think for a moment of the billions of man-hours that have been wasted over the years by people who believe they “have to” train several hours a week if they wish to lose body fat.

In terms of diet, the subjects on the study consumed regular food – three meals a day, plus two snacks; food that you can find in any supermarket. No drugs were involved. No supplements were employed, nor were they required. And, in case you were wondering, we are half way through another round of this program, this time with 65 subjects – and ALL of them are repeating the results of those on the first study.

High Fructose Corn Syrup; The Evil Ingredient

It has been estimated that the average American consumes 138 lbs. of sugar a year! Making up at least 50% of that is High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS). It is nearly impossible to consume a sugary drink, or processed snack food that doesn’t contain HFCS. Sometimes you have to look close because manufactures like to hide it by using aliases' including Inulin, Agave syrup, Dahlia syrup, Tapioca syrup, Iso –glucose, crystalline fructose, fruit fructose to name a few.
Entering the American diet in the early 70’s as an inexpensive, sweeter alternative to table sugar (Sucrose), HFCS has a longer shelf life than sugar made from beets or cane. Because it is synthesized HFCS has a higher fraction of Fructose (55%-80%) than natural sugar (50%) thus its name and the health/ risk benefit it is associated with.
On the pro side there is little caloric difference between the table sugar and HFCS and as a plus (initially) to diabetics, HFCS hardly raises insulin levels.

The adverse effects take a little time to manifest;despite small insulin reaction upon ingestion, over time HFCS consumption leads to hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance (leading factor in type II Diabetes and Heart Disease),reduction in the hormone Leptin (the body’s natural appetite suppressant) , reduced metabolism of calcium (osteoporosis), copper(collagen/elastin), magnesium, and iron(Anemia)and increased levels of uric acid(gout). HFCS is metabolized in the liver and converted into fatty acids/triglycerides and stored within 20 minutes of digestion negatively effecting blood lipids (hyperlipidemia), body fat(obesity) and liver function(non-alcoholic liver cirrhosis).
Though the evidence of the dangers of HFCS is mounting, don’t be naive in believing that simply reverting back to table sugar is a healthy alternative. The healthy alternative lies in eating a diet where the foods don’t have content labels.

Average Weight People May Still Be at Risk for Obesity Related Diseases

Too many people are still focused on their body weight and not on Body Composition. The more lean muscle mass one has the better health they will enjoy. To add lean muscle you have to lift weights or heavy objects.

So, why are health clubs packed with new members trying to lose weight by eating themselves to death on every piece of cardio available? It use to bother me when I went to the gym 4 and 5 times per week, but now that I train once a week it doesn't irritate me so much as it frustrates me.

My point was really driven home by a segment I saw on Good Morning America today. Click on the above link and watch the video because is was very poignant and the individual interviewed was very real and believeable.

Cholesterol Only One of the Risk Factors in Heart Disease

Of the all the headlines in the newspaper proporting the newest research findings as as "ground breaking" and "life saving" a new study by The University of Michigan Meical School and VA Ann Arbor Health System really is ground breaking because of its de-emphasis on LDL levels (bad cholesterol) and dogmatic administration of statin drugs for an approach which takes into consideration the persons overall risk for heart disease.

"We’ve been worrying too much about people’s cholesterol level and not enough about their overall risk of heart disease,"
Rodney A. Hayward, M.D., director of the Veterans Affairs Center for Health Services Research and Development and a professor of internal medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School

With the number of people taking a statin drug rising daily and the incidence of heart disease progressing at an even greater rate (notice I didn't say dying because we do have the most advanced life saving procedures in the world) you would have thought intellegent people would have caught this little snafu a long time ago.

"...if your LDL cholesterol is high, but your overall cardiac risk is low, taking a statin does not make sense for you,” Hayward says. “If your cholesterol is your only risk factor and you’re younger, you should work on diet and exercise.”

I believe if we ate less complex carbohydrates and indulged our bodies in a little bit of exercise, long advocated by men like Art De Vany ,there would be much less heart disease, obesity, diabetis, arthritis etc.
This particular study published in the February 2009 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine and critiqued with the skill of a surgeon by Dr Michael Eads, found that low carbohydrate diets increased the good cholesterol(HDL)more than the diets that had higher carbhohydrate levels.

The Definitive List on Edible Oils

I was talking to my lovely wife the other day about this Grapeseed oil she had purchased. I was raised on Extra Virgin Olive (Granda Orlandi bought it in a can that looked like the kind that contains paint thinner) we don't need another oil in the House! Well, it seems a friend of a friend went to a cooking class at Williams Sonoma where they learned that Grapeseed oil has a higher heating tolerance than Olive Oil thus making it a better choice when cooking. I don't like to take anyones recommendation on what foods are safe until I do a little investigating. Now I make no bones about the fact that I work smarter not harder, so I checked with one of the better Nutrition Blogs Mark's Daily Apple , which should be added to your favorites if it already isn't. Mark's okay with the Grapeseed oil but as you will see when you check out the link, it's not a must have product. It seems that ancient Romans used the oil from the grape and thus benefited from the properties of resveratrol. The big drawback is that it takes quite a bit of grape to get a little oil, another words it's expensive. I ate the Grapeseed cooked Poultry and I did like the sweeter taste along with the reduced mess afterward (higher flash point means less stuck on the griddle). And I can see myself using the rest of the bottle (this stuff ain't cheap) but I don't think Grapeseed oil will be on the shopping list in the future.
Check out Mark's Daily Apple for the definitive oil list!
