Long Distance Running-Bad for the Heart?

I make no bones about my professional and personal dislike of running. I understand the "runners high" and the thrill of competition, but health wise running is UNHEALTHY!
A recent abstract submitted to the American College of Cardiology throws a little cloud over the notion that intense aerobic activity is heart healthy.

A group of elite long-distance runners had less body fat, better lipid profiles, and better heart rates than people being tested for cardiac disease, but, paradoxically, the runners had more calcified plaque in their heart arteries, according to a study reported here.

I have stated many times that inflammation is the underlying problem in many dis-eases and pathologies. The researchers have a theory as to why the long distance runners had more arterial plaquing.

"You have to consider that these runners may be in a constant state of inflammation, and that may be why we are seeing more plaque,"

How does the body heal when in constant state of inflammation? It doesn't! One of the litmus tests used to determine wheather an exercise regime is healthy is if there is a balance between catabolism and anabolism. Per the researchers comments, I would say long distance running is not healthy.
The same research was sited on ABCNews.
