It has been 8 months since I started incorporating Graston Technique into my Chiropractic Practice. I have to admit to being somewhat of "Soft Tissue" Snob prior to taking Graston's M1 course and implementing into my treatment protocols. I never thought that I would feel comfortable utilizing an Instrument over my own two hands. The impact on my clinical outcomes has been large. Routine soft tissue injuries are remediating in as little as 2-3 treatments where they typically took 6-8. The biggest improvement has come in treating post-op hip and knee replacements. For years we have seen patients who had knee or hip replacements only to suffer lower back symptoms. In addition these patients would complain of post-op stiffness and pain about the replaced joint after their release form PT. With the use of Graston Instruments I have noted drastic improvement on these patient's Range-of-Motion and pain. In addition the corresponding lower back pain and hip pain typically remiss much faster.

I have been utilizing soft tissue manipulation in my Chiropractic practice for over 24 years. I have studied many soft tissue techniques over those years adapting some of the protocols but never investing myself in one in specific and I certainly had not purchased instruments to assist in the treatment. This past December I became certified in Graston Technique which is an Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Manipulative technique. I have not seen such immediate changes in my 25 years of practice. Please watch this video of Graston being used on a Patient with Neck issues. The treatment is very gentle and takes as little as 5 minutes to work an entire area of concern. Most patients see results within the first 1-2 treatments and many are asymptomatic in just a few weeks. This is astounding since many of the patients I used the technique on at first were chronic sufferers with a lot of scar tissue.

Some patients were advised to “stay active” despite the pain while others were told to adjust their levels of activity based on their pain. Those who remained active ended up recovering more quickly and feeling less depressed. On the other hand, patients who adjusted their activity levels felt more depressed and were less mobile.

Researchers suggest that back pain patients remain active and continue their daily activities when possible. This will likely promote a positive outlook and increase your physical mobility to put you on the path towards recovery. Consult with a doctor in your area to learn more about how you can stay active even with back pain.

More recently, we have learned that inactivity not only lengthens the disability but also increases the likelihood that degenerative changes will occur. This is why post-op orthopedic patients are out of bed and walking within hours of their procedures. More esoteric is the fact that movement helps us forget about how bad we feel and makes us feel better emotionally. Nothing worse than sitting around doing nothing, thinking about how bad we feel and depressed about missing work (income). This is why I stress stretching, modest activity and maintaining as much of your Daily routine as your status allows. Oh and of course Chiropractic care!!

From playing numerous sports all through grade school to intramural sports in college and partaking in numerous other physical activities in my 22 years of life, I have never had any serious injuries, unless you count a sprained ankle. No concussions, broken bones, trips to the emergency room, surgeries, torn ligaments or muscles. I never knew what it was like for an athlete to deal with a serious setback in their fitness goal. That was until this past summer when I tore my trapezius muscle.
I had no idea that it happened either. I was doing some dynamic stretching warming up for deadlifts that morning. As soon as I bent over to touch my foot I felt something strange happen to my upper back. I can’t explain the feeling, it just felt different. I still did my workout that day just fine. I iced my trap that night just as a precaution and thought everything should be fine. However, the next day it felt like someone poured concrete into my neck. I couldn't move at all! I had to roll off my bed in order to even get out of bed. I then crawled to my phone like a newborn baby. I managed to call my mom and asked her to make an appointment with my uncle who is a chiropractor. When I finally managed to get to my uncle’s, he told me to lie on his table so he could inspect the damage. He could tell there was a lot of inflammation and that I probably strained or slightly tore my trap. He said I would need to take a few weeks off from using the muscle. He adjusted me, which helps in speeding up the recovery. To be honest, I do not remember the rest of the visit. My mind blacked out given the pain and all the worries.

So after a few weeks off I was back at it, doing Crossfit. Just a little bump in the road, I told myself. That was until I strained my trap again in late September. This time I knew exactly what it was when I felt it happen. This time, thankfully, it wasn't as bad. So after another trip to my uncle I decided to rehab my trap back by swimming. After a month of swimming I felt great. I still did Crossfit here and there, but not as intense.

Late November, I decided to start doing Crossfit again and I wanted to join a box so I could have a coach and a good program so that my injury wouldn't come back. I joined a box downtown called Queen City Crossfit and I fell in love with it. Loved the coaches, members, the programming, and the extra push and encouragement everyone gave during the workouts. My coach knew about my trap injury and would only push me to where I was not risking injury recurring. I started to feel confident enough again in my body that I could go harder during workouts. Well I was wrong. I strained my trap again for a third time in a matter of months.

I was pissed off at my body. Why is my body not letting me push myself to the limit that I am so accustomed to? Where did I screw up? Am I ever going to be 100% again? All these questions blew up in my mind. I decided it was in my best interest to stop going to my box and doing the thing I love. I told myself I would not put a time limit on how long my recovery should be. I have been taking it very easy working out and rehabbing my trap back to health. From many visits to my uncle this past month and long talks with my mom who also dealt with a sports injury tearing her ACL playing tennis, I still do not know if I am emotionally ready to start working out again at the same intensity I am accustomed to. That’s right, I said emotionally ready. Physically, my trap feels better for the most part. After messing up my trap the third time, I know what exercises I need to work on. However, there are not any exercises I know that can help me forget about my injury. I still am scared every day I work out that I might tear my trap again and be forced to take another month or more off.

The human body is an amazing organism. It will constantly fix itself know matter what you did to it given time, rest, and nutrition. However, your body cannot fix your mind. My trap injury has definitely changed my perspective on sports injuries. Coming back from an injury is tough because it is like getting put in a cage with a lion and it bites your arm off. After surgeons give you a new, stronger arm, they put you back in the cage with the lion. Of course you are scared because you think the lion is going to bite your arm off again. However, if you have the confidence and forget about the fear, you can beat that lion. Well this week I decided I need to go back in the cage with the lion and continue with my fitness journey without that fear. I decided that life is too short to be fearful of reaching for your goals.

The position may be causing you pain, even if you don't feel it. CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta explains the effect "text neck" is having on our bodies.

With the boom in technology that has young children to older adults engaged we are just scratching the surface of the side-effects. The best bet is to improve your overall strength with some focus on the upper back muscles. Increased muscle tone will improve your posture and make holding your head less fatiguing.
Chiropractic care and massage will also ease your ills especially if your work requires extensive computer use.

Researchers recruited 115 pregnant women who were (1) experiencing pain in their back or pelvic region, (2) had not engaged in chiropractic care during the previous three months, and (3) were not restricted from participation. Each woman then was given chiropractic care, with the frequency of visits and methods of manipulation solely determined based on the preference of the chiropractor for that particular expecting mother.

Data was collected at one week, one month, three months, six months, and one year past the initial chiropractic visit to determine what improvement, if any, the women noticed in regard to their back pain. What they discovered is that the level of improvement in pain increased the more time went on.

For example, when asked one week into the treatment sessions whether or not the women noticed a reduction in their level of pain, 52 percent said yes. That amount increased to 70 percent one month into treatment, then to 85 percent being happy with the results after just three months of chiropractic care. At the six month mark, 90 percent said that they noticed reduced pain in their back region, and the benefits continued with 88 percent reporting positive effects one year after the initial chiropractic treatment session.

This particular randomized-controlled trial consisted of 107 adult participants who began experiencing low back pain at some time within the previous 12 weeks. Each person received one of three different treatments: manual-thrust manipulation (MTM), mechanical-assisted manipulation (MAM), or usual medical care (UMC). The manipulation groups received a total of eight treatment sessions (two per week for four weeks), and the UMC group engaged in three visits during this same timeframe. Self-reported data regarding both pain and disability were collected at the beginning of the study, immediately post-treatment (at the four week mark), and three and six months later.

Upon the completion of the treatment sessions, or four weeks into the study, MTM patients “showed a statistically significant advantage” in regard to linear regression over both the MAM and UMC group members. Additionally, MTM patients had a higher level of responders when it came to disability factors (76 percent) than when compared to participants in the MAM and UMC groups (50 percent and 48 percent, respectively). They also experienced better results in regard to pain as well, with 94 percent of MTM patients reporting improvement in this area, as compared to 69 percent of MAM and 56 percent of UMC recipients. What does this mean in real-life terms?

Researchers concluded that, “Patients improved with all 3 treatments, however manual manipulation lead to significantly greater reductions in pain and disability at the end of care (4 weeks).” Essentially, all three of these methods may offer some level of relief, but the one with the greatest and quickest amount of self-reported improvement was—hands down—chiropractic care.

Upset, anxiety, boredom, and restlessness all are common triggers for impulsive eating that can lead to weight gain. Here are some ways to preempt an emotional binge and keep the urge to comfort eat in check:

Stick to regular mealtimes

Since hunger can set up cravings, eat satisfying meals and snacks and stick to regular eating patterns.

Hit “pause”

Interrupt rather than act on a craving by phoning a friend, taking a walk, or tackling a project that will leave you feeling good.

Tune out temptation

Turn a blind eye (and nose) to tempting foods that you know are off-limits. Ban them from your home, desk, car, and handbag.

Snack smarter

Satisfy the essence of a craving with something sensible. Tortilla chips are crunchy and salty, but deep-frying loads them with fat. Get the same taste sensation with whole grain pita bread, cut into wedges, lightly sprayed with cooking spray, sprinkled with salt or dried herbs, and toasted crispy brown.

Visualize success

Imagine yourself as the confident, healthy and in-control person you want to be. Think positively and pat yourself on the back when you take control and avert a binge.
Numerous studies have shown that chiropractic can be an effective treatment for patients with low back pain. Now a new report has looked further into the effectiveness of chiropractic by comparing it to physical therapy treatment, and, more significantly, studying the long-term benefits of chiropractic as measured by the annual number of office visits.

Most studies that look at long-term effects of treatment simply look at self-reported outcomes: level of pain and disability. This study took a different approach. By examining how much care patients sought after the initial study period, they could determine the effect each treatment method had on future health care consumption:

“Care seeking behavior by patients with low back pain is most commonly associated with increased pain and disability, meaning more care is sought when worse symptoms are experienced. The amount of health care utilized may therefore be used as a measure of patient health status, and thus may be compared between groups of patients to determine effectiveness of certain therapies.”

The authors started with 191 patients with low back pain. 107 patients received chiropractic care and 84 patients received active exercise therapy from physical therapists. All patients received treatment 2 to 4 times per week for four weeks. The study subjects were then followed for one year to assess outcomes. The authors found:

38% of the chiropractic care patients and 54% of the physical therapy patients sought care for their back pain during the one-year follow-up. Chiropractic patients had an average of 2.2 visits to a health care provider after the treatment period, while physical therapy patients had an average of 6 visits.

“We hypothesized that there would be no group difference in the average number of visits to any health care provider. The results demonstrated that actually there were significant group differences during the year after trial participation, with a higher number of visits to any health care provider and to a general practitioner in the EP group.”

“Based on one-year follow-up data imputed for complete analysis, participants who received physical therapy (exercise program) during a clinical trial attended a higher number of visits to any health care provider and to general practitioners during the year after care when compared to participants who received chiropractic care (flexion distraction) within the trial.”

Benzodiazepines -- marketed under such names as as Xanax, Valium, Ativan and Klonopin -- are widely used to treat insomnia, agitation and anxiety, all of which can be early signs of impending Alzheimer's disease in the elderly. But the current study sought to disentangle benzodiazepines' use in treating early dementia symptoms, probing instead the possibility that heavy use of the medications may permit, cause or hasten the onset of Alzheimer's dementia.

The study compared the pattern of benzodiazepine use in 1,796 elderly people diagnosed with Alzheimer's with that of 7,184 similar people who had no such diagnosis. Such a study design, conducted by French and Canadian researchers and published Tuesday in the journal BMJ, cannot by itself establish that more intensive use of the medications causes Alzheimer's disease. But it does strengthen such suspicions.
The authors of the study created an index that gauged the intensity of a participant's benzodiazepine use and found that at the end of a five-year period following an initial prescription, Alzheimer's risk mounted steadily. Those who took the cumulative equivalent of daily doses for three to six months over a five-year period were roughly 32% more likely than those who took none to develop Alzheimer's. Those who took the cumulative equivalent of a full daily dose for more than six months were 84% more likely to do so.
There's already strong research evidence that frequent or regular benzodiazepine use degrades memory and mental performance in humans and animals. And some research suggests that with regular use of this class of drugs, the receptors to which they bind in the brain become less active. And lower activity of those receptors has been linked to cognitive decline.

"In view of the evidence, it is now crucial to encourage physicians to carefully balance the risks and benefits when initiating or renewing a treatment with benzodiazepines and related products in older patients," the authors wrote.

International medical guidelines recommend the use of benzodiazepines as treatment for anxiety disorders and transient insomnia, but caution that they are not meant for long-term use, and should not be taken steadily for more than three months. But many patients continue to take these drugs for years. In addition to their cognitive effects, benzodiazepines are widely implicated in the national epidemic of opioid pain medication overdoses and fatalities that result from mixing them with alcohol and opioid drugs.
“Caffeine intoxication” became official in the medical community when the “Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders,” known as DSM-5, added the diagnosis last year.
So do cappuccino lovers need to worry about limiting their consumption?
One expert, Matthew Johnson, associate professor in the department of psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University, explains how caffeine works in the body and when to cut back.
Caffeine works by blocking adenosine, a neuromodulator in the brain that puts the brakes on excitatory neurotransmitters like dopamine and norepinephrine. “Caffeine allows these stimulating chemicals to flow, which can have a rousing effect, even at very low doses,” says Dr. Johnson, a psychopharmacologist who studies the influence of drugs on behavior and mood.
Some people will get edgy from a weak cup of tea. For others, a double espresso is required to get them into the shower in the morning.
Most coffee drinkers are familiar with at least some symptoms of overindulging—nervousness, excitement, insomnia, rambling thoughts. But a large majority of people who consume caffeine don’t experience severe consequences, Dr. Johnson says.
There are some case reports of students experiencing major anxiety after drinking a dozen cups of coffee, Dr. Johnson says. But overdosing would be difficult, “unless folks took multiple caffeine pills or drank many cans of energy drinks” such as Red Bull.
It is possible for a person to die from too much caffeine, “but that would mean about 14,000 milligrams, or around 140 8-ounce cups of coffee in one day,” Dr. Johnson says. Consuming that much would be difficult because of coffee’s self-limiting nature. “One cup makes you feel good and alert, but five cups may make you feel like your stomach is cramping,” he says. “You feel wired and you wouldn’t typically be able to go overboard.”
While clinicians may observe benefits and risks of caffeine intake, the effects are still being debated in academic circles, Dr. Johnson says. “The evidence that unfiltered coffee increases LDL cholesterol levels is convincing,” he says, referring to the “bad” type of cholesterol. “But it’s the mortality studies that count the most,” he says.
One study suggests mortality benefits at up to six cups of coffee a day, Dr. Johnson says. Another suggested mortality risks in people under 55 who drink more than four cups a day. As a result, “I would be hesitant to say that we’ve reached any final answer,” he says.
Current research into depression has looked closely at glutamate, one of the neurotransmitters affected by caffeine, Dr. Johnson says. “In a recent study, those who drank two to four cups of caffeinated coffee had fewer depressive symptoms, and the opposite was true for those who lowered their intake,” he says. That doesn’t mean depressed patients would benefit from a steady diet of triple lattes. “If a patient is depressed and predisposed to panic attacks, for example, caffeine might make the condition worse,” he says.
The most convincing evidence indicates you’re probably not at risk for major side effects if you consume up to about four 8-ounce cups of filtered coffee, or around 400mg, early in the day, Dr. Johnson says. “If you’re drinking under four cups a day and not having any side effects, then you’re probably OK,” he says.
The subjects were in good health, but aging had left its mark. “This was before 75 was the new 55,” says Langer, who is 67 and the longest-serving professor of psychology at Harvard. Before arriving, the men were assessed on such measures as dexterity, grip strength, flexibility, hearing and vision, memory and cognition — probably the closest things the gerontologists of the time could come to the testable biomarkers of age. Langer predicted the numbers would be quite different after five days, when the subjects emerged from what was to be a fairly intense psychological intervention.

At the end of their stay, the men were tested again. On several measures, they outperformed a control group that came earlier to the monastery but didn’t imagine themselves back into the skin of their younger selves, though they were encouraged to reminisce. They were suppler, showed greater manual dexterity and sat taller — just as Langer had guessed. Perhaps most improbable, their sight improved. Independent judges said they looked younger. The experimental subjects, Langer told me, had “put their mind in an earlier time,” and their bodies went along for the ride.

After a lecture in 2010, in which she’d discussed how when we talk about “fighting” cancer we actually give the disease power, a man buttonholed Langer and laid into her. His wife had died of breast cancer. “He said she had fought it, and I made it seem that it was her fault,” Langer told me.
Langer apologized to the man. “Those are good points, and I’m sorry I didn't address them,” she said. “But let me explain to you that it’s the culture that teaches us that we have no control. I’m not blaming your wife; I’m blaming the culture.” Langer imagines a day when blame isn’t the first thing people reach for when things go awry. Instead, we will simply bring to bear the power of our own minds — which she believes will turn out to be far greater than we imagined.

Though muscle and ligament strain are the most common causes of low back pain, degeneration of the intervertebral discs and osteoarthritis of the facet joints are also major causes of low back pain and other spinal health issues. Recently, researchers set out to find whether disc degeneration and osteoarthritis of the facet joints are related and how they develop throughout life.

The study was done because it is difficult to image the facet joint’s degenerative history and its relationship to other degeneration in the spine. Organ donors were used to compare the characteristics of the lumbar spine to the condition of their nearby intervertebral discs. This was assessed through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

It was found that not only is facet degeneration common, it was found as early as 15 years old even though the intervertebral disc remained normal. The most severe facet degeneration was found at L4/L5. Facet degeneration progressed along with disc degeneration throughout life.

Researchers were surprised that facet degeneration can begin at such early ages. They concluded that facet joint degeneration needs to be explored when determining osteoarthritis of the spine and causes of lower back pain in general. A chiropractor can assess yours or your adolescent’s overall spinal health and determine if there is a risk of developing lower back problems due to osteoarthritis and degeneration.

Over the last few decades, more and more research has been done showing the effectiveness of chiropractic for many different health conditions. Here’s an overview of the studies and their findings:

The research is pretty clear that chiropractic is the best way to recover from and prevent back pain. In fact, even the AMA recommends chiropractic over surgery!

In a recent study published in the Journal of Aging and Health, researchers found that while older people are more likely to suffer from lower back pain, they are less likely to seek treatment.

The cross-sectional telephone survey determined that 12.3% of older adults experienced chronic lower back pain versus 6.5% of adults aged 21-44. In addition, older adults with chronic lower back problems experienced pain for a longer time and became more disabled than younger adults. Surprisingly, the older adults were less depressed about their situation.

The older adults were also less likely to seek or receive treatment. Whether the treatment was bed rest, medications or alternative care, older adults were less likely to receive these treatments than younger adults. Why?

Though the study did not focus on the “whys” of their findings, one might consider the expectations of older adults versus younger adults. As we age, the snap, crackle, pops, aches and pains certainly seem to become more prevalent. If we think this is the normal aging process, we may be less inclined to seek treatment, merely accepting lower back pain as yet another sign of the unstoppable aging process.

In addition, older adults living on a fixed income might be less likely to spend money on lower back pain. Indeed, conventional treatment for lower back pain may become quite costly, especially if surgery is suggested. However, chiropractic care is regarded as a more favorable and effective treatment for lower back pain compared to medication or surgery. It is also a more affordable and less invasive choice; both of which may appeal to older adults.

In our chiropractic office located in the Professional Center at the Beechmont Racquet & Fitness Club, it is not uncommon to see people who are suffering with neck pain. Unfortunately, some of our patients tried to “wait it out” to see if their neck pain would go away on its own (which it didn’t). However, a study published inThe Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy suggests that engaging in chiropractic care is a better solution as 94% of sufferers can experience relief—even after just one week!

Both groups participated in cervical spine nonthrust manipulation (which is when we work on your neck area), receiving two sessions each, and they were also asked to do some exercises at home. In addition, the second group engaged in thoracic spine thrust manipulations (your thoracic area is your upper and middle back) to see if this helped relieve their neck pain. Over ¾ of adult Americans experience lower back pain at some point in their lives, and nearly 1 in 5 experience it each year, making it important to determine which treatments are most effective. This double-blind study looked at the effectiveness of treating subacute lower back pain (LBP) with chiropractic adjustments when compared to treatment with muscle relaxants or a placebo (sugar pill).

7 chiropractic adjustments were given over the 2-week treatment period to the chiropractic adjustment group. Adjustments were tailored to the patient’s needs, and included upper cervical and lumbar (neck and back), sacral (lower back) or pelvic adjustments.

Practitioners administered cyclobenzaprine HCL (5 mg), carisprodol (350 mg), and methocarbamol (750 mg) in bottles labeled “A,” “B,” and “C” to treat the subjects in the muscle relaxant group. Usage and dosage were determined by the medical practitioner’s clinical judgment, with the combination of medications determined by effectiveness and adverse reactions. Subjects could halve or double the dosage in bottles “A” and “B,” or switch to bottle “C” for bottle “A” if excessive drowsiness occurred, and were instructed to discontinue medication if side effects were severe. Acetaminophen was also offered in a bottle labeled “D.” The placebo groups were given exactly the same instructions, only their bottles contained placebos.

While the study was meant to be blind (the subjects would not be able to tell if they were receiving real or sham adjustments or medications), there was a higher tendency for the groups that received true chiropractic treatment and that received the muscle relaxants to perceive that treatment was given, and a higher perception in the sham treatment group that treatment was not given. This could be due to the effectiveness of the treatment, however.

During the 4 weeks of the study, pain was significantly reduced in all groups. Initially, the group that received chiropractic adjustment had overall higher baseline VAS scores, but after treatment, their scores were lower than the other groups, indicating an even more impressive level of improvement in the chiropractic subjects.

The change in reported pain among the 3 groups was statistically significant: subjects in the chiropractic group reported greater pain reduction than the control group. While scores on the Oswestry Disability Index improved for all groups over the 4 weeks studied, the greatest improvement in scores occurred in the chiropractic group.

Depression and Shober (lumbar flexibility) scores improved in all 3 groups during the 4 weeks, with no difference between the groups.

GIS evaluations (which measure the physician’s assessment of improvement) showed that patients given chiropractic adjustments improved more than subjects who received muscle relaxants or placebos did.

The authors concluded:

“Chiropractic was more beneficial than placebo in reducing pain and more beneficial than either placebo or muscle relaxants in reducing GIS.”

Surely you must have dreamed of the day when you don’t have headaches! This blog post will contain two ways you can potentially decrease the frequency and severity of your headaches and do so in a short period of time.

The first method is to get a chiropractic manipulation for your headache. To some people, this may seem like out-of-the-box thinking but after it’s explained why it works, it will make sense to you.

Spinal nerves and cranial nerves (nerves inside the head) control the sensation of pain on the face and head, as well as the five senses. When any of them are irritated, that’s when you will have symptoms. A headache is only one of numerous symptoms that could potentially result from irritated nerves. Chiropractic manipulation allows the irritated nerve the chance to heal, and thus helps restore the nervous system impulses.

In a study of 127 people who suffered from migraines (at least one per month), 83 people in the chiropractic group received a maximum of 16 chiropractic treatments for headache over a two-month period of time. The rest of them were in the control group. There was a significant improvement in frequency of migraine headache, how long they lasted, how disabled they were as a result of a headache and how much medication they used.

Now here’s the best part: 22% of these patients had more than a 90% reduction of migraines! All these positive effects happened from chiropractic treatment.

About 50% of those who received chiropractic treatment reported significant improvement in the seriousness of their migraine headaches as well.

Your first method to seriously reduce the frequency of your headaches is to start chiropractic treatment.

The second method is to decrease your dependence on migraine headache medication. It can be difficult to suffer through a migraine headache but the fact is that headache medications can cause headaches!

Who needs or wants to be saddled with a headache anymore? Take this information and make it usable right away!
