Shoulder W Exercise

Mike Reinold writes a physical therapy blog on which I saw the Shoulder W Exercise.
In today's culture most are sitting at a computer or behind a the wheel for a good percentage of the day. This can lead to neck, upper back and shoulder pain and all their associated issues. Strengthening the muscles which support and stablize the shoulder girdle and upper spine is by far the best solution for a potentially chronic problem.

Watch the video below and see how the scapulas are brought together while the shoulders are externally rotated working the lower portion of the trapezius muscle and the posterior members of the rotator cuff (teres minor and infraspinatus).

I tried this exercise myself and noted, as pointed out by Mike, that there is no involvement of the upper trapezius. Most rotator cuff/upper back stabilization exercises over work the already contracted upper trapezius muscle making for a very uncomfortable movement and lead to poor compliance.

The Shoulder W exercise is a very subtle movement but highly effective; give a try.
