I was reading an article in the Cincinnati Enquirer entitled: Hearing Loss is Incredibly Common. In the article a 67 year old man from Virginia told his story of how one day while lifting weights he suddenly lost his hearing. Hearing aids helped him to regain some hearing but the reason for his loss at that moment was to remain a medical mystery. This reminded me of the story of Harvey Lillard
Harvey Lillard, janitor of the Ryan Building in Brady Street, Davenport, Iowa USA, was not a happy man. 17 years before, while working in a cramped, stooping position, he had felt something give way in his spine. The immediate result was not only pain...he found he had lost his hearing.
He mentioned his problem to Daniel David Palmer, who had an office in the Ryan Building and was a keen student of anatomy and physiology. Daniel Palmer had a theory. He surmised that the spine was the highway along which ran the central nervous system. If that highway should become in need of repair and in any way restrict the constant traffic of brain impulses and orders carried by the central nervous system, other symptoms seemingly unconnected to the spinal column could result.
He examined Harvey Lillard and found that one of his vertebrae was misaligned. On September 18th 1895, he gave Harvey Lillard the first ever Chiropractic adjustment. Harvey's hearing returned...and Chiropractic was born.
A few years before I entered Palmer, Lillard's youngest daughter spoke at the school and verified her fathers' story.
I have to believe every Chiropractor has at least one "miracle" treatment. Over 21 years,I have seen amazing changes from the Chiropractic adjustments I have delivered. It really isn't uncommon to have positive results for vertigo, tinnitus, vision, and hearing loss from spinal treatments. Hearing aids for the man from Virginia, and many others, have improved hearing and quality of life. But what if they received Chiropractic treatment?
The moral of this story is to realize that Chiropractors are not spine doctors but nervous system doctors and the Adjustment has the potential to effect change in any organ and system in the body that receives neurological input.
