Remembering Dr. Royal Lee

As we celebrate the 85th anniversary of Standard Process, we also celebrate the 119th birthday of Standard Process founder, Dr. Royal Lee.

Royal Lee was born April 7, 1895, the fourth of five children raised by his parents, Daniel and Esther Lee, on a farm near Dodgeville, Wisconsin.

After serving the Army he went to work for Western Electric analyzing various pieces of electrical equipment, including a dental drill motor.  His interest in creating better dental equipment led to his enrollment in Marquette University’s School of Dentistry in 1920.

He created a motor/governor combination he called the Lee Electrodent Unit.  His invention was a success and he began taking custom orders for motors and governors.  At the time of his graduation from Dental school in 1924, he had already become an established businessman.

His education in dentistry ultimately led to an interest in nutrition.  While researching his senior thesis, he realized that a number of teeth-related issues were linked to nutritional deficiencies.  Upon graduation Dr. Lee sought to identify foods high in desired vitamins and minerals and thought deeply about how to retain these vital factors found in foods in order to use them to provide support for those with nutritional deficiencies.

In 1929 Dr. Lee developed an effective method for producing a food based product containing vitamins B and C.  After testing the products’ effectiveness on him, a person who had long been susceptible to seasonal challenges, and his mother, who needed to support her heart health, Dr. Lee saw desirable results.  He named the product Catalyn because the vitamin, mineral and enzyme complexes found within the product worked as organic catalysts.

Dr. Lee began to develop more supplements in line with his philosophy that “the best sources of vitamins and minerals are found in whole foods.”  His whole food philosophy eventually established an enterprise of three different supplement companies: Vitamin Product Company, Therapeutic Foods Company and Standard Process Laboratories.   The three companies merged into the one that is known today as Standard Process Inc.

Dr. Lee passed away in November 1967 at age 72 but his philosophy of helping people live healthier lives through whole food supplementation is carried on by Charles Dubois.
