Sitting increases risk of Diabetes and Chronic Disease in Men

Chronic disease and sitting time in middle-aged Australian males: findings from the 45 and Up

"Compared to those sitting <4 4="" 6="" and="" br="" day="" hours="" participants="" reporting="" to="" were="">significantly more likely to report ever having any chronic disease. .."

"Our findings suggest that higher volumes of sitting time are significantly associated with diabetes and overall chronic disease, independent of physical activity and other potentially confounding factors. Prospective studies using valid and reliable measures into domain-specific sitting time in middle-aged males are required to understand and explain the direction of these relationships."

To put more onus on these finding, even an hour of exercise per day does not negate the negative effects of sitting greater than 4 hours per day.

Some "experts" have recommended getting up and moving about every hour or 2. Personally, I don't think getting up and going to the rest room to break the sitting will be found to significantly reduce morbidity. The chemical and emotional co-factors have to be addressed in addition to modest physical activity. Conventional office settings with desks and cubicles will have to be scraped for more dynamic environments to not only abate the chronic diseases associated with this work environment but also to hold on to intelligent, productive workers. Look to the Tech companies to set the trends that will eventually be standard in all office environments.

We must not forget about the pain and dysfunction that arise from sitting especially while using a desk top computer, lap top or notebook.  As I have mentioned in previous posts, one inch of anterior carry of the head increases the stress on the neck muscles by 20 lbs.  This in turn can lead to headaches (including sinus type pressure behind eyes) reduced mental focus, fatigue, irritability, visual disturbances, dizziness, ringing in the ears, Neck and shoulder pain and numbness in the extremities.

If you must sit for long periods, do not neglect your spinal health.  You can only cover the symptoms for so long.
